• Happy New Year!

It's a great honor to be the very first person to wish you and your family a Happy New Year!

Very happy retail crime and petty theft is illegal again! No longer is it ok to steal under the silly limit of 950 dollars. Anyone with a little life experience knows that even a tiny steal that goes unpunished will lead to a second and third steal and eventually you have a chronic thief that makes our society worse.

The police in Florida do an excellent job shaming the bad guys on social media. I would encourage California cops to do the same thing. Shame has a special kind of impact on most people.

We also need to get back to public mugshots, because it's a vital tool to keeping our community safe. Unfortunately California’s Assembly Bill 994 makes mugshots very hard to show the public, basically police can only show the picture if the person is an imminent threat and even then it can only be posted for no longer than two weeks. And it gets even sillier, in true California fashion, law enforcement is required to post the alleged criminals preferred pronouns with the mugshot as well, yes because that will never be confusing ...

Every single day part of my morning routine is reviewing the daily arrest records. I do this so I can take preventative maintenance if shoplifters try to visit my store. This daily practice has saved me a lot of money and anguish over the years. Sometimes when I tell people they cant come in because of their recent arrest they get a bit upset, but deep down they understand that they won't be getting away with their nonsense today.

social media can be really good for fighting crime - recently we recovered a stolen vintage saxophone because the victim successfully posted high quality pictures and it was easy to match it to the item. We were able to show the pictures to the guy that brought in the item and he left it with us because he didn't want any trouble.

In other news ...

As we enter a new year it's a good reminder that we don't need to let our technology outpace our common sense. A Google inspired autonomous car program in San Francisco has been a security nightmare as the bad guys have figured out that these cars are easy to stop and re route. There have been stories of single women passengers being followed, having these driverless cars rerouted by pedestrians stepping in front of them and making it impossible for the 911 phone number to work because it's a moving vehicle.

You'd think that if you wanted to test an invention that would dramatically change society, that you would work out all the bugs before plopping it in radical left wing, dangerous San Francisco.

We benefit massively from technology, but maybe this driverless thing should be kept to closed loop type places. Like some airports - places with predictable routes. Just because we can doesn't mean we should.

Soon in the coming years we are going to see walking robots everywhere, as the technology gets cheaper for households. They will be sent on errands, they will do house chores and they will interact with you and it will be a weird thing to get used to. Right now the Tesla robot price is only 30,000 dollars from what I can tell, that's car financing territory. As production gets worked out, more families will see the value of chores getting done 24 -7. Seriously, what would you pay for a robot that handles the important but boring home stuff? For many it's tempting

If robots take center stage in our lives then keeping our cars human-operational will be essential as your car may be the last little place where you can have some time to yourself.

This is AM with your cc - happy new year!
